Digital Fortress

Digital Fortress: A Thriller
Author: Dan Brown
Series: ---
Publisher: St. Martin's Press
How Received: borrowed

It's an Internet user's spy novel where the good guys and bad guys struggle over secrets somewhat more intellectual than just where the secret formula is hidden--they have to gain understanding of what the secret formula actually is.

In this case, the secret formula is a new means of encryption, capable of changing the balance of international power. Part of the fun is that the book takes the reader along into an understanding of encryption technologies. You'll find yourself better understanding the political battles over such real-life technologies as the Clipper Chip and PGP (Pretty Good Privacy) software even though the book looks at the issues through the eyes of fiction.

My friend Arianna lent me this book a few weeks ago, and I finally got around to reading it yesterday. I finished it this morning.

For all you geeks and nerds out there who love computers and reading, this would be a really good book for you. If you aren't into all the computer lingo and all the hardware, it's still a decent book -- it's got what you would normally find in a thriller (gun chases, etc.) -- but it's basis is around the computers.

Overall Rating & Final Comments: 7/10. I was able to put it down and though I thought about it, I didn't need to get back to it.
Digital Fortress or Artemis Fowl?: Artemis Fowl is more based around fantasy while Digital Fortress is more hard-core facts, so it all depends on what you like, though both involve brains. My personal preference would be Artemis Fowl -- this wasn't exactly my cup of tea.

Happy reading!

  1. Hmmm....I haven't read Artemus Fowl yet. I probably need to. Digital Fortress looks interesting, but I'm really more into fantasy than sci-fi...Thanks for the review!

  2. "I was able to put it down and though I thought about it, I didn't need to get back to it"..

EXCELLENT! I couldn't express a feeling better! It's such a strange feeling to look over at the book you are reading and not have the immediate urge to pick it up!! I find those are the books that I wind up giving away because, even though I read it and could say "it was good".. it didn't do that something special to make me know that one day I'd want to read it again...

Thankfully, that doesn't happen tooooooo often! I hope the next book you read is better!

What do you have to say, my fellow bookworms?
