Does My Head Look Big In This?

Does My Head Look Big In This?
Author: Randa Abdel-Fattah
Series: ---
Publisher: Scholastic
How Received: school library

Sixteen-year-old Amal makes the decision to start wearing the hijab full-time and everyone has a reaction. Her parents, her teachers, her friends, people on the street. But she stands by her decision to embrace her faith and all that it is, even if it does make her a little different from everyone else.

Can she handle the taunts of "towel head," the prejudice of her classmates, and still attract the cutest boy in school?

This is the first novel by Randa Abdel-Fattah -- and I'm surprised. Why hasn't she been published before?

Oh, wait. This might be the first book she's written.

Anyway, it's really good.

I absolutely loved this book. It gave me a look into the mind of a girl who's religion I don't know much about, and I was able to relate to her despite that barrier. The language is interesting, the conversations between the characters are realistic, and the ending made me look forward to more books by Randa.

Overall Rating & Final Comments: 9/10. I was able to put it down and come back to it. If I hadn't been it would have gotten that final point.
Does My Head Look Big in This or...: Well, I can't think of anything that's like this book to compare to. So this book wins!

Happy reading!

  1. I read this book years ago and really enjoyed it. The author has a second book out, called 'Ten Things I Hate About Me', though, I will say that it was a bit of a let down.

  2. This is a really great book and i recmmend everyone to read it especially to non-muslims so they can see what we go through just because of our differences like the hijab. I really enjoyed reading it.

  3. As a Muslim, i really enjoyed this. The author herself doesn't wear hijab full-time (see article in Muslim Girl magazine), so i don't understand how she can relate.

I can really relate to Amal when she is crushing on this hot guy, and he asks her out. And when he is about to kiss her, she tells him Muslims can't date or kiss or anything. That was hilarious!

  6. I read this book a long time ago, and i liked the book too. =)
But as a Muslim, some of the things are not totally accurate, so I wouldn't base all my opinions about a whole religion on this book.
But the book's a great read, and it can relate some of the experiences of a Muslim girl wearing the hijab.
