In her heart, Nina Goldman knows that beauty is only skin deep. But as a teenager growing up in Akron, Ohio – with her larger-than-life father Artie, a colorblind carpet salesman and frustrated musician – the only thing Nina wishes for is…to be beautiful. Or at least normal. As if having such an eccentric dad wasn’t enough, Nina has another issue to face: the mirror. Born with a strawberry birthmark over her eye, Nina spends countless hours applying makeup and trying out ridiculous hairstyles designed to hide here eye. Convinced that her birthmark is the only reason she’s not popular and can’t find a boyfriend, Nina must find other ways to survive high school. With a string of crazy exploits that have her riding in dryers and appearing on TV, Nina proves she’ll do just about anything to fit in, and even more in the hope of finding love.

After finishing the tenth Wheel of Time book, Crossroads at Twilight (finally!), I picked up Every Crooked Pot, which I had taken out of the library on a whim. I loved the cover -- it was really interesting, and, besides, Sara Gruen had a review on the front cover and I loved her book Riding Lessons. The combination reeled me in.

Every Crooked Pot is a fairly easy read and it's quite enjoyable. I was able to put it down but didn't want to. My only problem was the ending romantic-wise, though it wouldn't have been quite the same book without it.

Overall Rating & Final Comments: 8/10. It was an easy read, but it wasn't an 'OMG FANTASTIC!' book.
Every Crooked Pot or Sloppy Firsts: Sloppy Firsts has a lot more humor, but Every Crooked Pot really helps to boost your self-esteem, seeing as how she has to go through life getting teased and tormented, but overcomes. My choice would still be Sloppy Firsts, but I guess it all depends on your mood.

Happy reading!

  2. Great book. Starts off not so interesting, but at one point it grabs you and holds on for the rest of the story. The relationships between her and her friends are quite interesting, and sad in many ways. I really liked the ending, and it made me happy and confident with who and what I was as a person.
