The year is 490 AD. Fiery 16-year-old Elaine of Ascolat, the daughter of one of King Arthur's supporters, lives with her father on Arthur's base camp, the sole girl in a militaristic world of men. Elaine's only girl companion is the mysterious Morgan, Arthur's older sister, but Elaine cannot tell Morgan her deepest secret: She is in love with Lancelot, Arthur's second-in-command. However, when yet another girl -- the lovely Gwynivere-- joins their world, Elaine is confronted with startling emotions of jealousy and rivalry. But can her love for Lancelot survive the birth of an empire?
Ah, nothing like a book written in verse to make you smile!
I loved this book. It wasn't the most exciting, but it gave a new spin on the story which I had never heard. All of the characters develop and learn and none needed more emphasis than what was given, though Gwynivere seemed very fake at the beginning. The description was gorgeous and I was able to hate Lancelot after he rejected Elaine for Gwyn.
Overall Rating: 9/10. It would have earned that extra point had Merlin's character been a bit more realistic. (Yes, his 'out-there' appearance bothered me a lot...)Song of the Sparrow or The Lost Years of Merlin?: Both are around the same general time period, but The Lost Years of Merlin delves more into the fantasy genre than Song of the Sparrow.
Happy reading!

This sounds really interesting. I've had my eye on it for a while, but I didn't know that Guinevere is portrayed as such a cold person. That seems like an unusual perspective. I just asked my library to buy it. :-)
ReplyDeleteYay for libraries!
ReplyDeleteI was surprised at that, too - usually Guinevere is the warm, caring person we all love.
I think it sounds good, but I don't know much about the background.
ReplyDeleteYou don't have to know much about the background to enjoy the book, thankfully. ^^
ReplyDeleteI didn't like this book because it seemed to vague for my taste... then again i read the entire thing from midnight until 2 in the morning nonstop when i couldn't get to sleep so that might have something to do with it. O.o
