Fifteen-year-old Melkorka, an Irish princess, is kidnapped by Russian slave traders and not only learns how to survive but to challenge some of the brutality of her captors, who are fascinated by her apparent muteness and the possibility that she is enchanted.
I found this an interesting story, especially as it was based off of a 'true' tale. I was able to relate to Melkorka and Bridget up to a point, and all of the characters were believable. At points in the book I found my mind wandering, though, and the ending was rather abrupt - I wanted to know what happened to Melkorka. It's a short read, but it wasn't the greatest.
Overall Rating: 7.5/10
Hush or A Countess Below Stairs?: I prefer A Countess Below Stairs - it's a little bit l0nger, and I was able to relate to the main character more. But that's not by much - I'd just grab whatever was closest to you if I was you, they're really close in good-ness...
Happy reading!

PS: A happy Sweet 16 to my friend Amanda on Monday - her party was yesterday. Four hours of dancing; man, am I pooped!

I just read this book! In fact...I'm about to review it. :)
ReplyDeleteChattering Bee: I'll be sure to go check out your review. ^^
ReplyDeleteSounds like an interesting premise, but I wonder if the desire to stick to known facts (since it was based on true events) kept it from being a satisfying story.
ReplyDeleteHeather: The story itself was satisfying, it was only the ending that was unconclusive.
