Magic's Pawn

Magic's Pawn
Author: Mercedes Lackey
Series: Valdemar: Last Herald-Mage (#1)
Publisher: DAW
How Received: library

In Magic's Pawn, an ancient age in the history of Valdemar comes to life--an age when the kingdom was ravaged by the ungoverned fury of bandit warlords, ferocious ice dragons, and the wild magic of wizards. A new addition to Lackey's Valdemar kingdom--and her most powerful series to date! Reissue.

I found this to be quite an interesting book. The plot line wasn't original, so to speak, but the way that the story was told was quite interesting. I managed to sympathize for 'Lendel and Vanyel up to a point, but I found most in common with Savil.

The one major flaw to this book was that it seemed all of the emotions were a bit over-the-top. Later on, they become a bit more realistic, but some of the things Vanyel goes through seems impossible.

Overall Rating: 8/10
Magic's Pawn or The Rowan?: Anne McCaffrey' s The Rowan revolves around mind powers, though not the same as in Magic's Pawn. Both novels are equally enjoyable, but I think I'd choose The Rowan, for the emotions and the situations are much more realistic.

Happy reading!

  1. I'll add Magic Pawn to my TBR list ;)

I haven't read some Anne McCaffrey for a while so hopefully I get around to reading The Rowan as well.

  2. I do agree that some of the emotions can be over the top in Magic's Pawn, but in my opinion I like It much more then The Rowan, I'm not an Anne McCaffrey fan, but I have read almost every book in Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books.
