Dear John

Dear John
Author: Norma L. Betz
Series: ---
Publisher: AuthorHouse
How Received: author

When financial aid adminstrator Susanna Smith goes to Massachusetts to settle her aunt's estate, she never suspects that her well ordered life will take an unusual turn. Susanna and her faithful companion, Quincy, embark on journey into the past that not only reveals the life of an ancestor-a famous historic figure-whose circumstances parallel her own, but also results in an important discovery about her own life. With the pre-American Revolution as the backdrop, and a cast of old and new friends, the excursion develops into an adventure with historic drama and a dash of unexpected danger.

My mind kept wandering during this book. A lot of the book focused on letters from Abigail Adams to John Adams, and I never found myself reading the letters, merely skimming them. The most interesting characters in the whole novel were Mrs. O'Hara, Susanna's old neighbor, and Quincy, the dog. Susanna irritated me at times, and the other characters were just ordinary - nothing sparkled. The only thing that kept me reading was to see whether or not Susanna and John, the real estate agent, actually ended up getting together. Besides that, the writing was dull, the letters - however historically accurate - a bore for me to read. A history buff might love this novel, but I found it uninteresting.

Overall Rating: 4/10.
Dear John or Atonement?: The first half of Atonement, but not the second half, is better than Dear John, but overall, I'd still choose Dear John.

Happy reading!
