Soon it becomes clear that Daine's talent, as much as she struggles to hide it, is downright magical. Horses and other animals not only obey, but listen to her words. Daine, though, will have to learn to trust humans before she can come to terms with her powers, her past, and herself.
One of my friends has been trying to get me to read Tamora Pierce for /ages/. I was surfing the library and liked the cover and the description... I didn't realize it was by her until I got home. It ties in with her Song of the Lioness series, but I haven't read them and was able to understand it just fine.
I loved Daine as a main character. Even though she's younger than me, I was able to relate to her. Her ability makes sense, and the stages in which she learns and what she struggles with seems natural rather than forced. The other characters are both entertaining and lovable, or hate-able, in the case of a select few. The plot line wasn't completely original, but it was an enjoyable story none the less.
Overall Rating: 9/10.
Wild Magic or Magic's Pawn: Two completely different books and plot lines, but both involve communicating with animals. Because they're so different, it's hard to decide, but I'd have to say I enjoyed Wild Magic more.
Happy reading!
