Senior Quote

I don't know which of the following to use as my senior quote. So... help!

Y'all get one vote.
And there are some variations of the same quote.

---

1.
"Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and all together quite impossible to describe..." - Wicked // To the family I love, the friends I adore, and the teachers who made high school worth attending.

2.
"And just to clear the air, I ask forgiveness for the things I've done you blame me for. But then I guess we know there's blame to share, and none of it seems to matter any more..." - Wicked

3.
"Who can say if I've been changed for the better, but because I knew you, I have been changed... for good." - Wicked // To the family I love, the friends I adore, and the teachers who made high school worth attending.

4.
Why be normal?

5.
"Unusually and exceedingly peculiar and all together quite impossible to describe..." - Wicked

6.
"Who can say if I've been changed for the better, but because I knew you, I have been changed... for good." - Wicked

My friends are leaning towards one and three. Vote, y'all - I'll coordinate yours with my friends, and that'll be my senior quote!

Peace, love, Wicked.

Banned Books and I

The title of this post is called Banned Books and I.

Because it's about, well, banned books and, er, me.

And what do I believe?

Unless it's ordering the killing of everybody on the planet*...
NO BOOK SHOULD BE BANNED.

This week is Banned Books Week, and frankly, some of the idiots in American astound me. This post shall be divided into the following three sections.

1) Teenagers don't know what's going on in the world!
2) ____ is trying to promote _____.
3) _______ is bad!

1) Oh no! My virgin eyes! There's a book with PREMARITAL KISSING.
I think I just died a bit.

Seriously, people. We know what's going on in the world. Teenagers - and in a lot of cases, preteens - actually know what the hell is going on!

We know there are drugs.
We know there is sex.
We know there is alcohol.

Are we going to run out and do it?

Sure, some teenagers are. It's in the way they were raised. They're the rebels, the people who were going to end up doing it anyway, even if they hadn't read about it.

As for us, not knowing about it isn't going to change that it is out there. Actually, not knowing puts us at more risk. We don't see the risks that are involved, or the consequences, if we don't know it's out there. How do you expect us to learn if we can't discover this knowledge for ourselves? I, for one, know plenty of teenagers don't take what their parents say seriously.

Banning a book like Ellen Hopkin's Crank because it's about drugs is fucking ridiculous. (Wait. Was that a curse? We should ban this blog.) It's showing us how messed up our life will get if we do drugs! (To see more about Ellen and banning, please read this awesomely epic blog post of hers.)

We know it's out there. Trying to shield it from us will just fail.
And then when we're shoved into the outside world, it will be waiting to get us.
Just like carrot draining vampire rabbits.
(Also see: Bunnicula.)

2) What!? Laurie Halse Anderson MUST be promoting anorexia because she wrote about it! Oh, the HORROR! She wants stick people!
Hahahaha, um, no.

Just because somebody writes about something doesn't mean they promote it. I'm pretty sure the whole point of Wintergirls is to show the awful effects anorexia has. It's showing why you *shouldn't* try to starve your body into stick figure sized submission.

Ellen Hopkins - oh, look, she's back! - wrote Crank (which is my Ellen Hopkins book of choice today) to try to stop people from doing drugs. It's based on a true story, and it's a story she never wants to happen again. She knows it will; she knows she might not be able to stop it.

But one kid reading her book and seeing the consequences could be a damn well good way to help.

Now, oh book banners, you wouldn't know this. You look at her book and go...

EGAD! Drugs!? Mild cursing!? Possible SEXUAL EXPLICIT CONTENT!? She's the reason so many teenagers are cursing and doing drugs and, lo and behold, having SEX.

Um. Epic fail to the book banners, for you have not read the book. You have simply biased it based on topic.

Fail, book banners.

Fail.

Of course, The Book Muncher phrased this much more eloquently than I did, using Castration Celebration as her example. [[link]]

3)SUNSHINE!? FLOWERS!? SHAKESPEARE!? These are horrible, horrible things and need to be banned this INSTANT!
Of course, that's using Eyes Like Stars, a book which I doubt has been banned. But that's the ludicrously of it.

People are judging based on what they dislike.

Homophobic? Well, we must get those books out of the library and burned straight away, because it's bad! Because love of any sort except man and woman is FORBIDDEN! Do you hear me! FORBIDDEN! -echoes-

Um. Not happening anytime soon. As long as there are people, there will be gay people. It's just love. Get over it.

Drinking? IT'S HORRIBLE HORRIBLE HORRIBLE! Oh, one teeny sip of champagne and the teenage population is doomed, doomed, doomed!
Yes, I'm against drinking. But it's a large part of our culture now, so guess what? Get the hell over yourself and *move on*. You want to stop your kid from drinking? Make sure there's not anything to drink around.

FUCK. Oh no. I cursed! I CURSED! I'M DOOOOOOOMED.
You sense my sarcasm, I hope. Yes, curses aren't the best of things. They're vulgar and unnecessary. Do we use them anyway? Hell yeah. Because sometimes, it adds emphasis where emphasis is needed, and not all of us are eloquent enough to use a different term.

People, there is no reason to ban books simply because you don't like them, or you're paranoid and think your teenager will do what the books do. We ain't in Rome. We're not going to do as the characters do.**

Grow up. You're more immature than we are.

Peace, love, books for all.
~Nicole

*I have to state this because their probably are leftover Nazi books roaming the planet somewhere, along with the idiots who go, "Let's kill the gays!" "Let's kill the Jews!" "Let's kill the blondes!" "Let's kill the people who have slightly larger left nostrils!"
**Crazy Twilight fangirls who want their necks bitten by Robert Pattinson are the exception to this rule.

PS: Banned Books reminded me of this...

Operation Corset

I went to the Renaissance Faire last weekend, and what do you know? I HAVE PICTURES.

Custom made moccasins. So. Comfortable.

LOL

Where the jousting takes place.

Gosh darn it, those things are heavy.

Oh hello Sir Scarlet.

But what does the amazingly awesome Renaissance Faire have to do with Operation Corset?

Well... EVERYTHING.

There are two parts to Operation Corset.
1) Buy a corset to go with my black dress for prom.
2) Buy a mask to go with my corset & dress for prom.

Simple, no?

The problem is - these things are expensive. Operation Corset involves me saving up a hell of a lot of money. With limo expenses, tickets, yearbooks, christmas presents, and other things to buy, along with driving lessons and permits, can I do it all in time for prom?

We'll find out - and, of course, I'll keep you informed.

Peace, love, corsets.

Final Friday Interview - Tony DiTerlizzi

He's one half of the mind that brought you The Spiderwick Chronicles. Yes. He's the amazing Tony DiTerlizzi!

N: Hey Tony! Welcome to WORD. You're the co-creator of The Spiderwick Chronicles - you must have worked with Holly Black quite a lot. Quick, dish - what's your favorite and least favorite thing about her?
TD: Thanks for having me WORD. What’s the 'word' today? How about radalicious?

Rad•a•li•cious (Rad a lish us), adjective
1. Something so unbelievable cool that you want to lick it.
2. A little known band from the 1980’s with minor hits like “Cake Farm” and “Old Tomato Shoes”

I am indeed the co-creator of the Spiderwick Chronicles with my good pal, Holly Black. She and I are like siblings. Old, faerie-loving-creepy-goblin-drawing siblings.

Seriously, my favorite thing about Holly is that, true to her name, she is always dressed in black. So it is easy to color coordinate with her. I think she owns the entire “Gashlycrumb” clothing line made just for fabulous teen authors.

My least favorite thing about Holly is that…hold on…where does this interview appear? On a blog…is it a popular one? I see…

I have no least favorite things about Holly. Everything she does is radalicious.

N:Pick a mythical creature. If they were real, how would the world react?
TD: I pick the one-and-only mythical creature known as Walt Disney’s head in a jar. The world would be excited to find that it is still alive and full of theme park ideas. We would all tune in to see who will own and care for it after it is sold on eBay.

N: What's your preferred method of writing? Do you write in a notebook, on the computer, with music...
TD: I write everywhere. Usually its in a sketchbook – where I can doodle and write out ideas. My iPhone is also chock-full of little post-it note ideas that hit me when I am out and about.

I listen to quite a bit of music while I work – though I cannot listen to anyone singing while I write. (Somehow the lyrics get all into my head). So I create playlists on iTunes of soundtracks and themes while I create.

For instance, while working on Spiderwick, I listened to:
“The Black Cauldron” soundtrack
“Braveheart” soundtrack
“The Dark Crystal” soundtrack
“The City of Lost Children” soundtrack
“The Princess Bride” soundtrack
…and The Gorillaz.

Just kidding, I didn’t put the Gorillaz on that playlist. But I do listen to them. A LOT.

To contrast this, I created a 1950’s-inspired whacky playlist to listen to while I worked on Adventure of Meno. On it, I had:

“The Jetson’s” theme song
“The Witch Doctor”
“Eep Opp Ork (Uh Uh)”
“Purple People Eater”
…and the Gorillaz. Did I mention I like them? “Demon Days” was awesome.

N: It's raining ____. Why?
TD: It’s raining Breyer’s mint chocolate-chip ice cream. But not in the boxes, that would totally destroy the car…and you can’t really catch it with your tongue. But, like rain, it doesn’t make you gigundous when you eat your weight in it.

Mmmm, sweet minty-chocolate rain. Is that thunder or my stomach?

N: How often do you read? What are your favorite books?
TD: Does reading other people’s facebook status count? If so, I read A LOT. I mean, like every 15 minutes I’m reading something.

No seriously, I read quite often and many of the books that I adored as a kid have shaped the types of books that I am making today.

This can be a long and ever-changing list for me. But, here are some all-time favorites:

Peter Pan and Wendy – J.M. Barrie’s classic has surly pirates, bloodthirsty native Americans, a hungry crocodile, feisty faeries and flying kids with weapons...what more could you ask for?

Watership Down – Richard Adams takes you on an incredible quest from a home colony that’s completely eradicated to Shangri la. One the way, there are monsters, villains, allies, oh, and a fascist leader trying to seize the hero’s new home...and its all told with rabbits. You read that right – rabbits.

The Mouse and The Motorcycle – Mouse buddy + toy motorcycle = Awesome!

The Lorax – In my mind, this one of Dr. Seuss’s undisputed classics. Sadly, we need the Lorax now more than ever.

Lafcadio: The Lion That Shot Back – One of Shel Silverstein’s lesser known titles, but one of my all-time favorites. Actually, I learned about this one when my younger brother read it for school and had me help with his book report. It is one of those stories that you will always remember.

N: What did you think of the Spiderwick movie?
TD: I think they made a movie of my books…that’s called: AWESOME!

Really, the filmmakers did a great job of adapting the stories. I really got a chance to see firsthand what goes into making a film. I understood a lot of the changes from the source material and agreed with most of them – simply put, they couldn’t jam everything from all five books into one film. It would have been really long, and really expensive.

But they did manage to retain the themes of the books (like Jared’s growth in dealing with his parent’s separation, and the knowledge that can be contained in a single book). And, of course, I loved seeing my creature designs brought to life. That’s my childhood dream-come-true!

It was an awesome ride. I’m ready to do it again.

N: Tell us a bit about your upcoming works.
TD: I mentioned Adventure of Meno earlier, which is a silly series of books created with my loverly wife, Angela. It is about a space elf who comes to Earth and befriends a near-sighted jellyfish and a wish-granting sprite. Seriously.

The books were inspired by our love of old 1950’s cartoons, toys and Little Golden Books (hence the songs on the aforementioned playlist). We wanted to make a funny, simple series to read aloud to our little girl.

After that, I’ll be launching a new trilogy. The first book is titled The Search for WondLa. It’s a futuristic adventure teeming with aliens, robots and monsters – a fairy tale for the twenty-first century.

N: It's the dead of night. You're walking, alone, when... ______.
TD: Is that thunder!? Is it about to rain?

Yes! I see mint chocolate-chip ice cream pouring down from the heavens! No need for an umbrella, just a napkin and some galoshes.

Radalicious man, radalicious.

Thanks for stopping by, Tony! Catch him over here at his website [link]!

Cleopatra's Daughter

INTERVIEW WITH TONY DITERLIZZI. TOMORROW. BE HERE.

Cleopatra's Daughter
Michelle Moran

Marc Antony. Cleopatra. One of the greatest, most tragic love stories of all time.

Now, we learn of the fate of their children.

Selene is just one of the Cleopatra's children; her twin brother Anthony and her are Cleopatra's "moon and sun". These are titles they must bear as their mother takes their own life, as they and their siblings are swept away to Rome by Octavian, as they find their way in Rome's politics. What exactly will become of the moon and sun?

I love this story.
Er, I mean, the little I read of it.

Michelle Moran is a fantastic writer. Her description, characterization - her writing was flawless. As a storyteller, though, Moran has one major flaw. Everything takes forever to happen. We spend the first chapter and a half (I'm estimating) for Octavian to show up. Another chapter and a half for the next event. Another chapter and a half...

... you get my point.

I loved the idea of the plot; I loved her writing. But the book went to slow, and at a time where my to be read pile needs to be whipped like an unruly lion back into it's corner, I don't have the desire to read it. It doesn't call to me to be picked back up. It doesn't capture my attention.

Fantastically written for my poor attention span.

Perhaps I'll pick it up at another time.

Peace, love, papyrus.

Showcases

Yes, I know I haven't done a book review in a while. (OMIGOD SCHOOL!)

You'll have one tomorrow! (Yes. I said it. Boo yah.)

But until then... check out these bad boys. Wendy Drolma attends the NY Renaissance Faire every year with her AMAZING masks; I'm ordering one for prom. (I won't tell you which one. Shh.) Her masks are part of my Super Secret Operation Corset - which I shall explain to you sometime this week, along with my recap of the Renaissance Faire.

But you have to check them out. They. Rock. These aren't even my favorites!

Peace, love, and cyclops.

HMS Challenger

Disclaimer: Post best read in a British accent.

Way back when, the ocean had yet to be explored. We knew nothing about it. Then, the HMS Challenger was sent out - its challenge? To scope the ocean and learn it's secrets.

With that in mind, readers, I challenge you to read (or reread) ten books between now and September 19th of 2010. But not just any ten books. These books must involve water - be it about pirates, mermaids, or the coast of California, fiction or nonfiction.

The question is - can you handle it?

Some of my suggestions?

Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer
Piratica by Tanith Lee
Dolphins of Pern by Anne McCaffrey
Crystal Door: Island Realms by Rebecca Moesta and Kevin J. Anderson

I'll have this up on my sidebar soon with all ten of my choices! So knock yourselves out; can't wait to see what happens!

PS: First challenge ever.

This giveaway is over.

Happy Friday! What, you thought this one was going to be a Friday Fronts post? As if...

RUINED

When Rebecca Brown goes to New Orleans to stay with her voodoo-obsessed aunt, she finds the beautiful city haunted by the effects of Hurricane Katrina. Rebecca is also startled to discover a haunting of a different kind: near a graveyard one night, amid the Spanish moss and beneath the moonlight, she meets a ghost girl named Lisette, who has been dead for 150 years. Lisette helps Rebecca unearth an ancient mystery in her aunt’s house, along with some troubling historical truths. Meanwhile, Rebecca must juggle adjusting to her snooty new prep school, developing a serious crush on a handsome boy, and dealing with an elite group of popular girls who may be linked to the ghostly mystery themselves.

Guess what? I have five copies of this fantabulous book to give away? What? What was that?

A Wrinkle In Time

A Wrinkle in Time
Madeline L'Engle

Meg Murray, her little brother Charles Wallace, and their mother are having a midnight snack on a dark and stormy night when an unearthly stranger appears at their door. He claims to have been blown off course, and goes on to tell them that there is such a thing as a "tesseract," which, if you didn't know, is a wrinkle in time.

Meg's father had been experimenting with time-travel when he suddenly disappeared. Will Meg, Charles Wallace, and their friend Calvin outwit the forces of evil as they search through space for their father?

I stole the the description from B&N's website.

Madeline L'Engle's A Wrinkle in Time is a classic fantasy tale. Though not one of my favorites, it's most definitely a fantastic story to read. All of the characters are undoubtedly original, and they're the best part of the story.

Have any of you seen the movie? I do enjoy it as much as the book. :)

A Wrinkle in Time or various other fantasty novels? A Wrinkle in Time needs to be read; it's one of those classic fantasy tales.

Rating: 8/10.

Happy reading!

Friday Fronts - Crank

The cover is just as important to selling as the book itself.

All of Ellen Hopkins' books have simple covers, but they're undoubtedly eye catching. Crank, itself, is interesting right up from the overall look - simple white text on a black background - to the details - the words are made of powder. Here are some of the other fantastic covers of her books...

Who doesn't love those!?

Don't forget to check back the last Friday of this month for the interview with Tony DiTerlizzi, coauthor of The Spiderwick Chronicles and other novels! Haven't read any of Tony's books? Don't worry! Check out the giveaway - we have two sets of the Spiderwick Chronicles to giveaway.

My Luggage

To alert you all, I did survive my last first day of high school. My classes are fun - my Economics teacher reminds me a bit of Julie Andrews - and I'm looking forward to the projects in my English class.

So what am I lugging around all day (besides the obvious pens, pencils, and notebooks)?

My writing notebook. Mine is much cooler than the one pictured here - it's fake black snakeskin with an awesome buckle and really cool black and white print inside.

The book Dewey. I'm currently reading it, so this book will constantly change. It gives me something to do during the one-or-two periods I have free (depending on the day). If I'm not blogging or doing homework or college stuff, of course.

Post It Notes. I have been taught by my best friend that these are necessary for survival. And they are fantastic; you can use them for so many things. Mine have my to-do list on them. Mine are awesomer than these, actually; they're lime green with lines and little decorations in the corner...

Nothing else in my bag is really that interesting. (Except the nunchucks for when I'm in ninja mode. But that's another story for another day...)

Living At The Edge Of The World

School starts for me tomorrow. My senior year - one of the perfect ten. Class of 2010!

On that note, this summer I had only two books to read for my English class. One fiction of my choosing (ha!) and one nonfiction from a list. The nonfiction I chose was Living At The Edge Of The World. It's a fanatastic memoir about a girl who lived in Grand Central and how she had to deal with the loss of her best friend, her family, and her addiction to cocaine.

My favorite quote?

“There’s a whole world waiting for you, Tina. Just love yourself a little, will you? Just love yourself enough to want something better.”

Sep 7, 2009

I...

I just realized I didn't have anything to say today. Which is more worrisome than actually not wanting to post...

So here is today's lesson: Read Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer.

Because... it's bloody brilliant.

YOUR FACE. Burn.

I saw this over at Eleni's blog, who saw it over at Jaime's blog. Of course, Eleni is really pretty, so it seems silly for me to do this. :)

Jaime: "I just think it's fun to share what we look like with each other, sure we have our profile photos, but they are tiny! Let's have some fun and see what we look like!"

One of the first pictures I took after cutting my hair at the beginning of the summer. Just because I could.

One of my best friends, Amanda, and I. This is from... last year?

After the MacBeth festival. I was playing The Ghost of Banquo. Hence the crazy hair. It was much funnier when I had the whole outfit on.

My friend Fluffy and I at junior prom. Hence where my played-with prof pic came from.

And there you go! Anybody else post theirs? I wanna see.

Anybody who knows me knows I love deviantArt. And not just because it's a place to meet brilliant people and see brilliant artwork.

Friday Fronts - The Hunger Games

We all need something to drool over every now and then.

This particular Friday Fronts goes to one of my favorite books. Ever.

Look at it. It's brilliant! Simple, but sophisticated. The colors they chose are brilliant, and it's the subtleties that make it so perfect.

It's sequel doesn't have quite the same pizazz that The Hunger Games did, but I still love it. The mockingjay was brought to life quite expertly - I wish I had had a chance to snag one of those pins.

What do you think?
