White Cat comes out May 4. Preorder it online at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, or Borders, or purchase it at your local indie bookstore.
Cassel comes from a family of curse workers -- people who have the power to change your emotions, your memories, your luck, by the slightest touch of their hands. And since curse work is illegal, they're all mobsters, or con artists. Except for Cassel. He hasn't got the magic touch, so he's an outsider, the straight kid in a crooked family. You just have to ignore one small detail -- he killed his best friend, Lila, three years ago.
Ever since, Cassel has carefully built up a façade of normalcy, blending into the crowd. But his façade starts crumbling when he starts sleepwalking, propelled into the night by terrifying dreams about a white cat that wants to tell him something. He's noticing other disturbing things, too, including the strange behavior of his two brothers. They are keeping secrets from him, caught up in a mysterious plot. As Cassel begins to suspect he's part of a huge con game, he also wonders what really happened to Lila. Could she still be alive? To find that out, Cassel will have to out-con the conmen.
Way I summarized the book to friends in four words: Cat-girl and magical mafia.
It's true.
I'm not going to say the book was bad; I enjoyed learning more about the workers and the world that Holly Black as created. The dynamics of the workers - how working is illegal, why the worker families have control over so much, the different types of working - was all really fun to read about.
Cassel is a somewhat interesting character - I couldn't really connect to him, but I liked reading about him. Cassel's grandfather and Sam were probably my favorite characters, and I liked the scenes where all of Cassel's family was together. Family dynamics are always fun.
But the world took a very long time to set up. I predicted what would happen with the white cat, with Cassel, with Sam, with the love triangle. One of the main characters was a bit of a bully who, though an interesting character, I didn't like. Characters were introduced that seemed to have no point (though they may have a point later on in the series.)
It was something I could put down easily and not think about until I had a spare few minutes, which is probably why it took so long to finish.
It was just... meh.
Also, don't forget to read who Holly dedicates the book to. It's, sadly, my favorite part of the book.
Final Rating: 6/10. Liking the world that it's set in, but not connecting to the characters and predicting the plot.
Cover Comments: LOVE that font! But what is it with making the names of authors HUGE and the titles small?
Happy reading!
Now you're making me want to buy it just for the dedicated to page. Great review, adding to my wishlist.
ReplyDeletehahahah LOVE the dedication!!!
ReplyDeleteDang, i thought this book would be great! I loved her Fae books!
ReplyDeleteReally promising review..now i want to now what the dedication is about if it was better than the book hah!
I have read some of her other books. I am curious about this one.
ReplyDeleteIt sounds interesting, but now I just want to get it to see what the dedication is. xD
ReplyDeleteI'm getting this one soon and don't know if I want to read it right away.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this book more then you did. But I also completely agree about its predictability.
ReplyDeleteI still want to read this one because I like her other work.
ReplyDeleteThis book looks great! thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteSay it ain't so! I want to read this one so badly. I still will. And, I agree about the author name needing to be smaller than the title. It's a little too Mick Jagger-y for me.
ReplyDeleteI really do hate it when authors names are HUGE on the cover and the title is small.
ReplyDeletemy friend read this book and she said it was pretty good. guess i'll just have to decide for myself when i read it! thanks for the review

ReplyDeleteHmmm I'm very intertested to learn about the world Hooly created but maybe I'll wait to borrow it from a friends :) Nice review!
ReplyDeleteHmm despite your 6/10 rating, I think I will still give this book a try. I have been dying to read this book for a while now, but I haven't gotten the opportunity. Thanks for the review and I'm interested to see if I will like it.
ReplyDeleteYou know, I haven't really heard many good things about this book...but I'm still excited to read it....Is that weird? Yeah, probably. I love your four word summary, by the way. XD Thanks for the awesome review!
ReplyDeleteThis one looks good. I'm not sure what I'll think though...
ReplyDeleteI've never read Holly Black before, but I'll definitely check out the others before reading this.
ReplyDeleteI don't know if this would be on top of my TBR pile, but I surely would read it. :)
ReplyDeleteI felt the same way with this one, but I'm looking forward to the sequel and hope it gets better. =)
ReplyDeleteI have heard mixed reviews about this one. The premise sounds really good though. I will have to pick it up!
ReplyDeleteI too have heard mix reviews. I'm not sure if it's one I really want to read. It's one I'll probably try but only when I have time.
ReplyDeleteI have heard so many mixed reviews on this one. But it still sounds like it could be interesting! Anf of course I want to see what that dedication is all about!!
ReplyDeleteI've been going back and forth on this one--It's great to see a review!!! I'll probably wait to pick it up when I'm low on books and have some extra time!

ReplyDeleteUGH!! I HATE books where the author's name is bigger than the title, which is probably why I won't be reading this book (that, and because I haven't heard ALL that great things about it. And because I never really like Holly Black's work).
Still. Fabulously written review! And now you've got me curious about the dedication. Next time I'm in Borders, I'm checking that out. XD
