Author: Tricia Rayburn
Series: Siren (#1)
Publisher: Egmont USA
How Received: ARC from BEA
Comes Out July 13, 2010
Seventeen-year-old Vanessa Sands is afraid of everything--the dark, heights, the ocean--but her fearless older sister, Justine, has always been there to coach her through every challenge. That is until Justine goes cliff diving one night near the family's vacation house in Winter Harbor, Maine, and her lifeless body washes up on shore the next day.
Vanessa's parents want to work through the tragedy by returning to their everyday lives back in Boston, but Vanessa can't help feeling that her sister's death was more than an accident. After discovering that Justine never applied to colleges, and that she was secretly in a relationship with longtime family friend Caleb Carmichael, Vanessa returns to Winter Harbor to seek some answers.
But when Vanessa learns that Caleb has been missing since Justine's death, she and Caleb's older brother, Simon, join forces to try to find him, and in the process, their childhood friendship blossoms into something more.
Soon it's not just Vanessa who is afraid. All of Winter Harbor is abuzz with anxiety when another body washes ashore, and panic sets in when the small town becomes home to a string of fatal, water-related accidents... in which all the victims are found grinning from ear to ear.
As Vanessa and Simon probe further into the connections between Justine's death and the sudden rash of creepy drownings, Vanessa uncovers a secret that threatens her new romance, and that will change her life forever.
I shall now summarize Siren in 140 characters or less.
Girl goes to summer house with sister and boys. Sister dies. Girl returns to summer house to find out way. Siren related chaos ensues.
Okay, okay, there's more than that, but that was for those of you who didn't want to read the massive summary that's on the back of the ARC.
I enjoyed it. A smart reader can figure out the plots as they move along in the book - I had an idea of who (because we all know what) is killing the men and what Vanessa's connection to her really was about one third of the way into the book. I knew what would happen with her and Simon. I had a sense about what Caleb had to do with it. As for the antagonist's sister and mother, I was surprised - as was I surprised by what Betty played into it.
I didn't really like the explanation as to how sirens were able to live among the humans - bathing in sea water/relying on salt - and how it became more necessary as they developed, though I accepted it.
I thought all of the characters were rather well developed, though Vanessa's constant lingering fear got to be a bit annoying at times. (Seriously. You've been through hell. 'Boo' shouldn't scare you.)
The only unanswered question was how Justine was communicating to Vanessa. Was she a ghost? A spirit? Was it her own sub conscience? It's not really explained.
All in all, a good read, though; it was nice to read about sirens, which I don't often read about. (Though my friend Liz just brought a siren-esque character into our RP. I wonder if he needs salt water to live?)
Overall Rating & Final Comments: 8/10. Good characters, good concept, with a slightly predictable plot. Sequel, please?
Cover Comments: I love it, except I wish they had done silver-esque eyes, and changed the font.
It comes out at the beginning of July. Be sure to preorder at B&N, Borders, Amazon, or your local indie - and keep an eye out for a giveaway! I have an unsigned ARC of this from the publisher to shimmy out to you guys! (So many giveaways, I know...)
For the record, I now have this song stuck in my head:

I won this, and I have to admit I am really excited to read it, awesome review!
ReplyDeleteThanks for providing an honest, yet fair review. I've been wondering about this book and I will keep your insights in mind.
ReplyDeleteThanks!
Marissa
I was really curious about what this was and listened to the audio of the first chapter. I'm going to expect some things when it comes out. *nods head*
ReplyDeleteWhat an amazing review for an amazing book.
ReplyDeleteI really want to read it now! It sounds very interesting.
I was hoping this was good. Thanks for the review!
ReplyDeleteA note from the publisher on the cover: The final hardcover edition has the creepiest spec'ed eyes that I have ever seen. Shiny silvery-purple eyes that change color with the light, and follow you absolutely everywhere.
ReplyDeleteI will not be sleeping tonight.
I've been interested in reading this book since I knew it was coming out. I've recently finished a siren novel of my own, and this was BEFORE hearing of it, mind... I want to know if the plots are similar, because if so, I'll have some fixing to do. But I'm sure this will be a great book on its own. I was upset at first at the similarities, but decided to be a good sport. :) As soon as it's out I'm going to pick up a copy.

Sounds like a great read! The summary is so spoiler-y! :( I agree about the font on the cover, not good at all. I'm going to have to go and get this one. It sounds like a must-read! :) Thanks for the great review.
ReplyDeleteIm really looking forward to reading this book!
ReplyDeleteGreat review and i agree, the whole bathing in sea-water thing is kinda weird? Reminds me of a mermaid ha.
Sounds interesting. Good review.
ReplyDeleteHey, great, honest review! The book sounds pretty interesting but it's not the kind of thing I usually read.
ReplyDeleteAah! I need this NOW!

ReplyDeleteLoved the review!
Can't wait for the sequel!
ReplyDeleteSounds interesting! I've never read about Sirens before so I'm intrigued. =)
ReplyDeleteThat kind of stinks that you figured out what would happen! But good review
ReplyDeleteI love the cover of this books. Thanks for your few concerns with the book. I think it's still one that my students would like.
ReplyDeleteCool review! I agree about the cover; it's so pretty, but I don't care for the plot. I've been dying to read this one ever since I first heard about it!
ReplyDeleteThis sounds like a really good book with some intrigue and mystery thrown in. Creepy seemed like a good word. I am like you,I would get tired of someone whining because they were afraid of everything. Get over it already, or just shut up about it.

I enjoyed reading your review. I just posted my review of Siren yesterday, and I agree with you on so many points. Vanessa's fearful nature didn't actually bother me, but the lack of explanation about how Justine was able to communicate with her was my biggest complaint about this book. I like your 140 character summary! :)
ReplyDeleteLoved your review!!! Siren looks really interesting/and possibly kind of creepy...or maybe it's just me?
ReplyDeleteI agree - great cover. And I like that a paranormal isn't about vamps/werewolves. So nice. Interesting that it's about sirens. Bring back classic mythology! lol

ReplyDeleteInteresting review. I've had my eye on this book for a while now and have heard mix reviews about it. Everyone seems to think the cover is creepy, but I can deal with creepy. XD I always thought the cover was cool.
Now that I've heard another review, I can't wait to read this!! (Course, it'll be a while because my goofy library won't have it this soon after release.)
