2010/2011 Steampunk Challenge

The Bookkeeper is hosting a steampunk challenge for this upcoming year!

I've been obsessed with steampunk lately - I blame Gail Carriger entirely. The clothing, the writing... it's all fantastic!

So my goal is to read SIX steampunk novels in this upcoming year. I think I can manage that. Maybe. We'll see.

01. Clockwork Angel by Cassandra Clare [own, read]
02. Sapphique by Catherine Fisher [own, read]
03. Heartless by Gail Carriger [own, read]
04. ---
05. The Hunchback Assignments by Arthur Slade [own, read]
06. Barnaby Grimes: Curse of the Night Wolf [own, read, chose not to review]

  1. Thanks for the reading list! I have a blossoming interest in steampunk, too. I've got an idea for a novel ... but I'm a little scared to jump feet first into this genre without reading a lot of it first!

  2. I didn't even know what steampunk meant until I looked it up when I was reading Clockwork Angel. ha ha NOW I know and I can see why you are liking it.

  3. In one of those weird coincidences that sometimes happens, just a little while after seeing your post, I found out about a monthly Steampunk event that takes place in Philadelphia -- happening tonight!! Unfortunately, I couldn't go tonight, but I am SO putting it on the calendar for next month. People dressed up in Neo-Victorian wear -- I've got to see it!

  4. WOO. I'm doing this challenge too. I don't have a set number of books or a set book list yet but I have written one review so far! http://www.sarahreck.com/blog/?p=276 -- if you're interested. :)

  5. This is a great idea! I'm doing Steampunkery in November and have a number of books to read that are Steampunk. I'm very excited!

  7. I absolutely loved the first 3/4 of The Somnambulist.

Personally, I'd recommend you swap it out for BONESHAKER by Cherie Priest -- a far superior book. Or LEVIATHAN by Scott Westerfeld. Great steampunk books from start to finish.

  8. Um, I'm not sure Neverwhere counts as Steampunk. I do believe that is Urban Fantasy. I can't think of any steampunk elements in it. You should read it anyway! I'm with Tom (above) if you haven't read Boneshaker, you have not read Steampunk.

  9. I may have to jump on this bandwagon. :) I loved Soulless and Leviathan and really need to get my hands on some more soon.

  10. I loved Clockwork Angel, but have never really looked into any other steampunk novels. I create steampunk jewelry, and am getting a tad addicted to the whole genre. :)
