Top Six

As I was daydreaming yesterday - about both Gail Carriger's Lord Maccon and Johnny Depp's Jack Sparrow - I realized there were quite a few fictional characters who would make Earth just a bit more epic. Of course, I couldn't go without sharing my list with you guys!

And then I realized that my list consisted of mostly guys, as they would be the ones I adore. So I have split my list.

Here are the Top Six fictional guys and gals that would make Earth just a bit more... interesting. Some, you may notice, are tag teamed - and not all are from books. It would have been Top Five, but I couldn't leave out the last two. It'd be rude.

Male & Female #1
Lord Maccon and Alexia Tarabotti
Original Location: Soulless by Gail Carriger
Reasons Chosen: One soulless female. One "loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf" male. Both stubborn, kick ass, and more interesting than any person I've read about in quite a long time.

Male #2
Captain Jack Sparrow
Original Location: Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest
Reasons Chosen: ... must I really explain this? He's Jack Sparrow. Captain Jack Sparrow. Savvy?

Female #2
Jacky Faber
Original Location: Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer
Reasons Chosen: She's just a generally kick ass character. Female pirates are so very rare, and one that has Jacky's morals and way of thinking? Besides, if we combined her with Male #2, this world would be so very, very interesting.

Male and Female #3
Robinton and Lessa
Original Location: Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey
Reasons Chosen: Not only is Robinton - in his younger years - attractive, but he's wise, composes excellent music, feels no reason not to love, and is utterly and completely trust worthy. And Lessa is resourceful, takes no crap, and managed to go from a cellar girl to the most influential women in Pern. I'd like to stick them against Bill and Hillary Clinton, thank you very much.

Male #4
Mr. Darcy
Original Location: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen & various movies
Reasons Chosen: Oh, Darcy. *swoon*
BBC Version | 2005 Movie | Book

Female #4
Elphaba Thropp
Original Location: Wicked: The Broadway Musical
Reasons Chosen: Why didn't I chose the book one? For one, though the book one is undoubtedly awesome, the musical version sings. And is more resourceful. And more magical. And a generally nicer and funnier character than the one in the book. I do love Gregory Maguire's Elphaba - Winnie Holzman just makes her more relatable.

Male & Female #5
Professor Dumbledore and Luna Lovegood
Original Location: The Harry Potter series
Reasons Chosen: Dumbledore is the fantasy geek's equivalent of God. As for Luna - she's crazier than the Joker, sweeter than a lollipop, and somehow manages to influence the world around her just by being Luna. And you have to admit - everybody loves Luna.
For the record, neither Harry nor Hermione nor Sirius made this list. But I love all three of them.

Male #6
Artemis Fowl (and, by default, Butler.)
Original Location: Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
Reasons Chosen: He's a millionare, has connections to the Fairy world, is a bloody genius, and that's not even before he's 16. He could give Bill Gates a good run for his money - actually, he could give anybody a good run for their money. Besides, he'd come with Butler. And Butler is awesome.

Female #6
Katsa
Original Location: Graceling by Kristin Cashore
Reasons Chosen: Have you watched that girl fight? I'd like to stick her on Survivor or something and see how she does. Besides, she'd be the modern day Robin Hood, and that'd be pretty darn awesome.

Honorary Mentions
Dimitri - Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
Hermione Granger - Harry Potter series
Sirius Black - Harry Potter series
Dace - Medalon by Jennifer Fallon
Bertie & The Faeries - Eyes Like Stars by Lisa Mantchev

Final Fridays - Heidi R. Kling

Today we welcome Heidi R. Kling to WORD! Heidi R. Kling's debut novel hits shelves this June. Until then, she's keeping her website updated, bloggin' up a storm, tweeting away, and wondering what we'll think of Sea.

N: Welcome to WORD, Heidi! Now, your debut YA novel, Sea, comes out June 10. Can we get a summary on what it's about?
H: It's a adventure-love story about hope after disaster set in post-tsunami Indonesia.

N: I can't wait to read it. (For those of you participating, you can use Sea in the 2010 Debut Author's Challenge.) You used to act. What would be your ideal role to play?

H: Great question! I played Clarisse, the spirited lead role in the play version of Fahrenheit 451 my senior year in high school which was awesome. After seeing Hamlet on Broadway a couple weeks ago, I think I'd like to try Ophelia.

N: I got to see a local production of Hamlet. It's a wonderful play. On the mention of Ophelia and people dying - two more years until 2012! How do you think the world will end? (Zombie apocalypse?)

H: Hmm...I need to read my fellow Tenner novel The Prophesy of Days to come up with a good answer.
But what I don't want to happen? Hunger Games or Forest of Hands and Teeth scenario. SCARY.

N: Hunger Games book = good. Hunger Games real life = not so good. If you had to co-write a book with anybody, who would it be?

H: I would love to co-write a book with my talented author friend Jon Skovron (Struts & Frets) In fact, we've discussed it!

N: Oh dear. It seems you've been arrested for accidentally murdering a leprechaun. (You didn't mean to step on him, really!) What will your last meal be?

H: LOL! Poor little leprechaun! I would have filet of lep...kidding. Filet Mignon, garlic mashed potatoes, and a giant hot fudge sundae. I'd also like a side of nunchucks so I could fight my way out of my death sentence. :)

N: Speaking of which *notreally* - what is a rainbow made out of?

H: Magic and love and dead leprechauns

N: Rainbows are slightly more creepy now. What books are you looking forward to this year - besides your own, of course?

H: You're so funny. Um. I'm really looking forward to reading All The Tenner Books and Carrie Ryan's The Dead-Tossed Sea and the second book in The
Demon's Lexicon series: The Demon's Covenant by Sarah Rees Brennan.

N: Nice selections! Let's wrap this up: what are three odd things we could find in your house?

H: Two Wild Things and a fat dog.
Thanks for having me. I love these questions!

Thanks for stopping by, Heidi! Remember, you can use Sea in the 2010 Debut Author Challenge. Don't forget to preorder Sea through Amazon, Borders, or your local indie store.

Next month's Final Fridays author? Julie Kagawa, author of what may be one of the best books to hit shelves this year - The Iron King, which comes out on February 1. Don't forget to preorder that as well! [Amazon] [B&N] [Borders]

Soulless

Soulless
Author: Gail Carriger
Series: Parasol Protectorate
Publisher: Orbit/Yen
How Received: library
Synopsis comes from the back of the book, because the summary was too amazing not to use.

Alexia Tarabotti is laboring under a great many social tribulations. First, she has no soul. Second, she's a spinster whose father is both Italian and dead. Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette.

Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire — and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate.

With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart?

I'm thankful that we weren't doing anything in school yesterday, or I would have been in big trouble with my teachers. I couldn't put this book down. It's funny, engaging - if I could pick my perfect book to read, it'd be this one. Why?

First off, the concept is completely original. Roll the steam punk Victorian era in with werewolves and vampires, throw in a girl with no soul, scientists, and some romance, and you have Soulless. Move from there to writing with a distinct tone and style, which causes the reader to laugh and sit at the edge of there seat all at the same time. This ties directly into the characters - original, interesting, and completely engaging.

Just - love. To quote my Twitter: wordforteens found what will probably end up being her favorite book of 2010. And it's not even the end of January.

Overall Rating & Final Comments: 10/10. Buy it. Now. Do it. *holds receipt out* See? I did.
Cover Comments: Loving the font and the image and everything.
Author Comments: If you get a chance to read it, read Gail's bio in the back, or head on over to her website and read it. It's just as funny as the book.

The sequel to Soulless is Changeless, which will be in stores August 1. I'm super stoked for it! Seems like I'll be doing a lot of reading in August! (New Hunger Games book comes out then, too.)

Sea & Heidi R. Kling

Oh, guess what? If you haven't noticed, I'm interviewing debut author Heidi R. Kling at the end of this month!

Want to know what her upcoming novel, Sea, is about?

Haunted by recurring nightmares since her mother’s disappearance over the Indian ocean three years before, fifteen-year old California girl Sienna Jones reluctantly travels with her psychiatrist father’s volunteer team to six-months post-tsunami Indonesia where she meets the scarred and soulful orphaned boy, Deni, who is more like Sea than anyone she has ever met.

She knows they can’t be together, so why can’t she stay away from him? And what about her old best friend-turned-suddenly-hot Spider who may or may not be waiting for her back home? And why won’t her dad tell her the truth about her mother’s plane crash? The farther she gets from home, the closer she comes to finding answers. And Sea’s real adventure begins.

Barnes and Noble

Guess who spent her Saturday night at Barnes and Noble?
No, not Nicole Kidman.
Me!

The two books I decided to buy this time around - thanks for the giftcard, Ale! - were Mercedes Lackey's The Phoenix Unchained, the first novel in that series and my own copy of Graceling by Kristin Cashore. Graceling was only ten dollars in paperback, and the Phoenix book was a discount bargain - six dollars for the hardcover.

Ready for the wishlist this time around? (A lot of the books I took pictures of won't be on the wishlist because I want their covers for Friday Fronts. What can I say? I'm a cover whore.) Remember, click to read more.

There was an Ireland photo book, too, but I didn't write down the name. c.c

They had a really gorgeously boxed set of Wicked and Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire that I thought was adorable.

And this sign made me DELIRIOUSLY HAPPY.

Oh, I lied. I bought Dragonheart by Todd McCaffrey on top of it all. (Not that I need another McCaffrey book. I'm up to over thirty of them.) But now it's story time!

I wasn't originally planning on buying another McCaffrey book - I have enough, and I'm getting tired of the continuation of the series. But as my friend Kellyn and I wander around, I see a copy of it, lying with it's cover and first few pages bent on the floor. I pick it up and glance at it.

I have a soft spot for badly cared for books - take, for instance, my Kool-Aid stained copy of Crank that I picked up at a garage sale - so I decide on the spot to buy it.

"I'm going to ask the people at the desk to knock a couple dollars off. Nobody's going to buy this one, especially with others at the desk."

Two hours later.

I head up to the front desk to pay and explain the situation to the (rather awesome, might I add) salesman at the front.

"I think we can knock a few bucks off, but hold on, and I'll get the manager. She has to make the call." I wait.

The manager comes over with an unbent version of Dragonheart. "Here, you can take this one."

"No, you don't understand. I want the bent one."
"Well, we can't take money off."
"Why?"
"Well, we'd just send it back to the company."
"And they would..."
"Toss it."

So, naturally, I bought it at full price. I refuse to let this poor little book go to waste. And the awesome salesman does a wonderful thing. He lets me use my friend's B&N card - which is technically not allowed in our store - and gives me a greater discount than the one I had asked for with the few bucks knocked off.

Take that, evil B&N manager.

Anybody else buy any good books lately?

Dead Until Dark

Dead Until Dark
Author: Charlaine Harris
Series: Sookie Stackhouse Series
Publisher: Penguin Group
How Received: library

Sookie Stackhouse leads the life of your normal crazy, psychic waitress. Until the vampire comes to town.

He's everything she pictured them to be - and when she saves his life, it sparks a series of events that lead to Sookie fighting for her life...

Is the series fun to read? Most definitely.
Are Sookie and the rest of the bunch interesting characters? Of course.

But it's not nearly the best series.

I'll launch into how it compares to Twilight on another day, but let's just focus on it's flaws for right now. The book is very plainly written - in a way, that's good. It's easy to understand. But it lacks... something. It's hard to describe. As for Sookie, she's a character full of variables. One minute she wants to spend the rest of her life with the vamp, next minute she's kicking him out, then she's ready to fight, then she's ready to give up... She's a very inconsistent character. Also, her life jumps to revolving around sex. Just a warning.

As a general story, though, it's a fast and entertaining read.

Overall Rating & Final Comments: 7/10. Quick and dirty read, but not the best.
Cover Comments: I got to gross out my marine biology teacher with this cover. Job well done.

Tricks

Tricks
Author: Ellen Hopkins
Series: ---
Publisher: Simon & Schuster
How Received: library

Three are girls. Two are guys.
Three are straight. One is bi. One is gay.
Rich. Poor. Good family. Bad family.

What they don't expect, though, is all that can happen when those powerful little words "I love you" are said for all the wrong reasons.

There's nothing I can say about Ellen Hopkins or her books that haven't been said before. She takes a subject so rarely touched on, with characters so often frowned upon, and makes them not only readable, but sympathize-able and relate-able.

Tricks or Crank?: Read them both. They're completely worth it.
Overall Rating & Final Comments: 10/10. Go read it.
Cover Notes: Not my favorite.

Oh, Lewis Carrol.

How you inspire such work is beyond me.

I mean, everybody knows the story of Alice in Wonderland. And because of this we all know the Disney movie.

And I'm certain everybody's heard of the Tim Burton remake of the movie? It looks awesome.

However, I just wanted to show you this. Not that I'm mildly obsessed with the soundtrack or anything. Nooooo...

Friday Fronts - Graceling

Love love love this cover!

True, I'm a big fan of any cover with swords on it - ie: Rampant - but the simplicity of this one makes me really happy. The colors are just gorgeous; the focus is entirely on the sword and the face reflected inside. The subtle flowers creeping out of the corner, the font used - so. much. love.

What do you think about it?

Favorites and Least Favorites

We've all got 'em. Our favorite heroes and heroines, our favorite love interests, our favorite this-and-that.

For the sake of the length of this blog post, I'm going to stick to my favorite and least favorite heroines. From books. That should cut it down to about... one long blog post. =3

Favorite Heroines:
Jacky - Bloody Jack by L.A. Meyer
(Favorite. Character. Ever.)
"A girl what's born for hangin' ain't likely to be drowned."

Elphaba - Wicked by Gregory Maguire
(Also seen, albeit a much different interpretation, in the Broadway musical.)
“People always did like to talk, didn’t they? That’s why I call myself a witch now: the Wicked Witch of the West, if you want the full glory of it. As long as people are going to call you a lunatic anyway, why not get the benefit of it? It liberates you from convention.”

Lessa - Dragonflight by Anne McCaffrey
"Look around you Lessa of Pern, look around the Weyr with unveiled eyes. Old and hallowed is the Weyr? Yes, but shabby and worn – and disregarded. Yes, you were elated to sit in the Weyrwoman’s great chair at the Council Table, but the padding is thin and the fabric dusty. Humbled to think your hands rest where Moreta’s and Torene’s had rested? Well, the stone is ingrained with dirt and needs a good scrubbing. And your rump may rest where theirs did – but that’s not where you have your brains."

Rose - Vampire Academy by Richelle Mead
"Yeah. We were badasses."

"No one had ever called me unnatural before, except for the time I put ketchup on a taco."

Holly Short - Artemis Fowl by Eoin Colfer
"Hey, Mulch, if you listen really hard you can just about make out the sound of nobody giving a hoot."

Of course, the list could go on for much longer...

Least Favorite Heroines:
Bella - Twilight by Stephenie Meyer
"It was hard to believe that someone so beautiful could be real. I was afraid that he might disappear in a sudden puff of smoke, and I would wake up."

Zoey - Marked by P.C. and Kristin Cast
"The door opened and oh my dear sweet lord I do believe my heart totally stopped beating."

Maggie - Shelter Me by Alex McAulay
*no quote available*

Hmm. Perhaps next Tuesday shall spawn my favorite love interests? We'll see, we'll see...

Who're some of your favorite heroines?

Graceling

Graceling
Author: Kristin Cashore
Series: ---
Publisher: Houghton Mifflin Harcourt
How Received: school library

There is a world where those born with an ability are feared and handed over to the King of their country to be put to use as they wish. They are marked with eyes of two different colors.

They are the Graced.

Katsa is one of those Graced - Graced with the knack of killing, of fighting, of being able to beat her opponent no matter what the cost. Her eyes are blue and green - and her uncle, King Randa, uses her as his own personal killing machine.

But what happens when Katsa no longer wishes to be under her uncle's control? When a silver-and-gold eyed man changes the way she thinks about her Grace? When it comes time for her to decide not only her own future, but of that of all the kingdoms?

Normally, I'm not a big fan of heroines who are automatically good at something. I'm more than happy to make an exception for this book.

Not only well written, Graceling was interesting and kept me on the edge of my seat. Katsa is a character you can really connect to - unique, but understandable and sympathize-able. Po (the silver-and-gold eyed man) was a lot of fun to read about, and the scenes with him and Katsa had me both awwing and laughing.

To give you an idea of Katsa's character, this is my favorite quote from her:

"If there's anyone I wish to stun at dinner, I'll hit him in the face."

I didn't have any big problems with this book - the plot line was fleshed out, the love story - though obvious - well done, and the characters interesting and original.

Overall Rating & Final Comments: 10/10. Just an excellent, excellent book.
Cover Notes: Was this the cover that helped inspire the cover for Rampant? Love it!
