Blogging In Real Life (1)

I've seen a lot of younger bloggers lately, those who want to do things with books or libraries or bookstores, but don't know how to apply things they've learned from blogging in real life. I've seen bloggers who stick to their Internet realm because they don't know how to drag their blogging skills into real life.

So I thought maybe I'd help a little. I mean, my entire college and career choice didn't come until after I had been blogging for three years. And I know a handful of bloggers who have taken their blogging skills and be able to apply them to real life, be it their jobs or their educations or just what they want to do.

But today, I just have a tip for those who want to work with books and have a blog: don't be afraid to put it on your resume.

You blog and review books, often receiving copies from publishers. That's not nothing. It shows you have earned trust from 'official' people, and know how to teach yourself how to do things, and that you understand the internet, and how to network, and you understand the industry - and most of all, that you can be dedicated to something for a long period of time.

Plus, bloggers get to do some cool stuff.

An excerpt from my resume.

Kelly from Stacked has a great post about using blogging as professional experience.

In the next few weeks I'll have at least a few more posts coming up on other bloggers that use blogging in their 'real life' and tips and tricks on how to work it into your life.

Is there anything that you'd be particularly interested in seeing?

  1. This is so useful! Thank you for this. I'm struggling to find a job right now due to lack of experience (and of jobs in the area), and my resume looks empty. Now I can add some more bits to it! I'm looking forward to your future posts :)

  2. This is something I'm working on as well. I included my blog experience for the first time in a resume for a Legal Assistant position (as a way to denote that I have experience as a liaison with vendors and clients). It was...interesting explaining it to the interviewer who never even heard the term 'blogger'.

  3. I think this is a great idea - especially if you're applying for a position that utilizes social media. As Lexie said, a lot of people are still unaware of bloggers (even 'young-ish' people!), but a position in marketing or data analysis (what I do!) would be great for someone with blogging skills.

  5. Awesome post! This is a great idea. I recently applied for a web development job and I put a note about my book blog on my resume. When I went in for the interview, they said "I checked out your blog" and asked me more about it.

..and I got the job, so I guess it was worth it. :D

  6. This is amazing! I'd love to start working in a bookstore and put book blogging in my resume in particular because it shows I have a wide knowledge about YA novels, what people like or don't like based on reviews, and the type of genres that are out there. New follower :)

  8. This is a great post, it honestly didn't cross my mind that I could use my blogging skills in a resume! Silly me. But this is not only useful but impressive as well.

    1. Hi Lizzy! Thanks for wanting to share! <3 I've added the share buttons to the post -- we'll see how long it takes Blogger to update that they're there.
